HALO/HAHO jumps are different from Army Airborne fixed-line jumps, which are the most common type of military skydiving. Fixed-line jumps are performed at very low distances (1,000 feet or less) and use circular parachutes. Airborne uses landline technology to deploy large numbers of troops to an area as quickly as possible.

Altitude
The first military use of parachutes was by artillery observers mounted on observation balloons. They were jumping from the balloons when they were damaged by enemy fire. Of course, the military use of parachuting has come a long way since 1912.

Convenient Location
The Perris Valley Vertical Wind Tunnel can be used as a resource and has proven to be a valuable training tool in any free fall program, in some cases reducing the need for AFF double jump instructions.
On-site VWT offers an instant training tool that allows students to refresh mid-course. The Perris Indoor Skydiving Facility allows for combat gear training in a controlled environment and should be used prior to direct free fall training.
Advantages of VWT in Military Freefall Training: Perris Valley Skydiving owns and operates Three (3) DeHavilland Twin Otters and Five (5) Shorts Skyvans. All aircraft are maintained to manufacturer specifications and all routine and non-routine maintenance is performed by FAA certified mechanics.

Military skydiving platforms are known as HAPPS (High Altitude Precision Parachute System) or "Hidden Parachutes" because they are not easily visible from the ground.
